Hyde Park
An earlier post talked of Gloucester, Stroud and Stratford on Avon. And late last year we talked about the naming of Armidale after the sea of the Clan McDonald on the Isle of Skye. Australia has a large number of imported names ... and not just from Britain. Another obvious one is Hyde Park, which provides an oasis of green amid the bustle of commercial Sydney. It's much smaller than its namesake, but just as attractive in its own way as the pictures show. Particularly prominent is the avenue of massive fig trees and the fountain at one end.

This is not relevant to your post but our news is dominated by the Haiti earthquake. As usual, the disasters bandwagon is in full swing and one would think we are the only people sending aid.Yet, if you look at international news on the satellite, each country does very much the same. "France 24" shows the French putting in a lot of effort. "Russia Today" shows a full field hospital being loaded. "CCTV9" from China shows them sending much. It is very heartening to see so many countries rallying round but how odd that each gives the impression they they are doing most! Richard.
