After a few days in Lisbon, we moved to Porto for the last 4 days of our meeting and we had ample time to stroll around this fascinating city. It's more plebeian than Lisbon, but in many respects equally historical and has a dramatic site where the Douro River (th land of Port wines) snakes through a deep trench towards the sea. This is a pictorial essay taken during those 4 days of field trips, paper sessions, and dining out. The images are presented in date order and not thematically.
Dense living
Fascist architecture
Scores of historic churches and lovely old houses with tiled frontages
The river tench
Part of the old Jewish / merchant quarter, with residents' occupations sometimes listed
Views across the city
An elegant avenue
An interesting road sign!
The Douro trench
Elegant riverside houses
Guess what they store in Porto's warehouses! Yes, it's port.
