Seattle i home to the world's longest 'floating' bridge, which spans Lake Washington between Kirkland where Em and her family live and down-town Seattle which is maybe 24 km (15 miles) away. The bridge is, I gather, really floating and can rise or fall a little depending on Lake Washington's water-level.That, in turn, reflects water inflow from up-stream and outflow through the canal system connecting the lake with Puget Sound whose low water mark is on average about 7m below the level of the lake.
The floating pontoons are actually made of concrete to which the road surface is attached. We cross the lake by this means quite regularly. Here are some images of the trip travelling westwards to Seattle's CBD taken through our car's windscreen.
