Some More Heritage

On our first full day in Tasmania we headed to one of the oldest places in the former colony, the picturesque village of Richmond. Mention of that name reminds me that many of Tasmania's place names are plucked straight from English predecessors. Hobart, for instance is on the Derwent river, but I can recall a few years ago standing on the banks of a such named river in Derbyshire. While on that subject, the Kimberleys have a small town called Derby but they pronounce it Darby.

Anyway, Richmond is a lovely little place famous for having Australia's oldest bridge, constructed in

As you can see, it was constructed in 1823, probably by convicts, and stands proud today. And here's the lovely view from the bridge.

The surrounding parkland and buildings are also beautiful and old by our standards:

Everything is so green and well-manicured.

And, if you look closely, many of the buildings seem to date from the 19th century. They were also well maintained.

And we found the atmosphere so peaceful and relaxing.

We also found quite a lot of interesting bird wildlife on the banks of the river. Max found some geese, a black swan, some ducks and other avian species. And here Bec is photographing some of them.
