View From Above

Having walked Cathedral Gorge, we had lunch and then headed to the local airport for our aerial view of the Bungle Bungles. This was an optional flight, and given that it cost well over $600 for the two of us (c. 350 GBP), not many people took the trip. For Dot and me, this flight was a highlight of our entire Kimberley trip and we would not have missed it. Once again, this post is largely pictorial. It could hardly be otherwise!

Here we are awaiting lift-off. We'll be following other fellow travellers on our Kimberley trip who were in the helicopter below.

I might add that these helicopters had no windows and we could lean out and photograph objects of interest lying below. In addition, we had a fair breeze on this day and when poking the camera outside of the helicopter it was sometimes difficult to keep it from bouncing around.

In the distance, below right, is the Osmond Range, some of whose rocks are 1.9 billion years old, and much reduced in height by erosion.

After the flights we met up for refreshments and watched a nearby cliff face turn red and then purple - brown as the sun sank in the west.

All up, it was one of my most exciting days ever.

Seriously spectacular scenery, Dad! I'm so glad that you and Mum were able to take the flight.
