Dining Under the Stars

On of the most popular attractions at Yulara, apart from trips to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, is dinner under the stars - an outdoor dining experience at sunset and lasting into the darkness of night. We were whisked out into the desert to a site prepared for a lovely buffet dinner with waiters, chefs and other staff. Guests sat in clusters of eight seated at circular tables to enable conversation. But before the dinner started we were ushered to a viewing platform for cocktails and canapes whilst we viewed to sun sink into the west and illuminate both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. As the sun went down, the rock faces turned from orange to red and purple and created gorgeous images for the viewers. By the way, the predominant orange-red hue of the rocks is the result of the oxidisation of iron particles in the rocks

What I cannot show is our astronomer! Yes, you read this correctly. Our hosts provided guests with a tour of the night sky through informed commentary by a scientist using a laser pointer. We saw constellations, the way to find due south using the southern cross, a planet or two, though not their moons, the milky way and one of the Magallenic clouds (our nearest galaxy. The extremely dark sky and the lack of light pollution in the middle of desert made for an unparalleled viewing of the stars above.
