Welcome to Yulara

This and many subsequent posts reflect on one of the most exciting trips I've made in recent years. Dot, Bec and Max joined me in a 9 day trip to Australia's red centre, visiting Ayers Rock, the Olgas, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, parts of the Larapinta Trail, Hermannsberg, and Palm Valley. We flew directly from Sydney to Ayers Rock! Yes, there are several flights a day to what is one of the largest rocks in the world in the middle of a desert. The non-stop flight takes about 2.5 hours and we're still only half-way across the continent. We hired a car at the airport and drove the short distances to the constellation of accommodation options at Yulara, the resort complex built specially to house visitors to the rock. We stayed at the Emu Walk Apartments, which were quite comfortable.

The first event that we experienced at Yulara was a ritual welcome by the local Aboriginal peoples pictured here. A small group of men enacted a series of ritual dances before posing for pictures with the visiting audience.

Bec and Max appear in both the following pictures.
