Mining Scenes

Now we turn to images of Broken Hill's focus on mining. It dominates the town visually as you can see from the first two images taken from streets near the centre of town. They're tailings from the various mines either closed or still active.

I think this picture show Bec taking a picture from the top of one of the heaps of mining debris. However, I stand to be corrected.

Also atop the largest heap of debris is a memorial to the many miners killed while on the job. The first two pictures below show the memorial's external design from two different angles.

Here we can see the memorial plaques documenting each casualty, the date of the event and other personal information.

The final two pictures show something of the surrounding mining landscape from the top of the pile. An awful lot of stuff has been removed to get at the mineral lodes - and mostly piled on the surface to the south of the town centre we saw in the previous post.

Alas, we didn't manage to work out if we could get inside a producing mine, like we did at White Cliffs. One final thing Our self managed superannuation fund owns shares in BHP the mining company mostly responsible for operating the town's mines, So does Bec's son Max. I hope he gets to look at some of what he owns, though I'd also advise that these days the company's major mining assets are iron ore enterprises in the Pilbara region.
