Mountain View Markets

Last Sunday, Emily Dot and I managed to escape the embrace of the grand-kids for a couple of hours and headed off to look around the Mountain View markets and maybe buy some, perhaps a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. Well, they were fascinating, well presented, absolutely crowded, and irresistible when it came to tasting the produce and buying heaps of it. In fact, we could have had a respectable lunch dining out on the samples!

Because of the crowds, we had to park a long way from our destination and then we were caught up in a US cultural trait - the street parade. I have no idea what the parade was in aid of, but there were the usual troops, marching bands, flag bearers and so on. Here's a back view of the end of the formal parade.

The next two focus on the huge number of market stalls tightly packed together alongside the railway station. Patronage was ethnically diverse and I'd guess that 50% or more were Asian or Latinos. Of course, these people would be used to buying from street markets and their presence might arise from a degree of home-sickness. I say this because the produce was often not cheap compared to supermarkets. Then again, much of the produce claimed to be organic - something difficult sometimes to prove.

One concession  to families was the provision of a lively band, which attracted youngsters.

The markets were well worth a visit. But take along a lot of spare cash.
